Between Crowds and Light
The Sagrada Família, Barcelona
I remember the first time I saw the Sagrada Família., mainly because it was only last year.
As the church came into view, the first thing I noticed were the cranes. They hung over the towers, moving slowly. It didn’t feel finished. It felt active, like work was always going on. Even though construction is supposed to be completed soon, it seemed like that might take away some of the uniqueness of visiting. It has been under construction for so long that the unfinished state feels like part of its identity.
It was busy outside. People stood in line, talking and taking photos. Getting in took time. We were checked at the entrance more than I expected, more than going through customs into Barcelona. It felt like a lot, but I understood why.
Inside, it wasn’t quiet. There were crowds, voices echoing, cameras clicking. Still, we had picked the right time to visit. The sun came through the stained glass and filled the space with color. Reds and blues moved across the floor and walls. That part stayed with me.
We didn’t stay too long. Before we left, we sat for a bit and watched the light coming through the windows. It felt calm in a strange way, set against the busy crowd around us. In the end, it was an enjoyable experience.
